Injury Victims: Insurance Company Profit Center

Updated December 29, 2018 | By Wilson Kehoe Winingham staff

There are two ways insurance companies make money: by collecting premiums and by denying (or reducing) claims. Insurance companies, like any other business, need to make a profit. Insurance adjusters all too often try to deny valid claims, or pay as little as possible on a claim, to increase profits at the expense of injury victims.

This tendency to deny claims has the unfortunate effect of turning victims of accidental injury into a profit center for insurance companies. Claims adjusters may even try to make injury victims believe they don’t need or can’t afford a lawyer—because they know that if an attorney gets involved, they’ll usually have to pay more.

You Have Nothing to Lose—and a Lot to Gain

Most personal injury attorneys work on a contingency basis, which means that you pay nothing unless you receive a cash settlement for your injuries in or out of court. Insurance companies have lawyers working hard on their side, and so can you, no matter your financial situation.

Insurance companies are interested in settling a case for as little as possible. They often mislead injury victims into rushing to agree to a settlement that may not be in the victim’s best interest.

If you’re injured, it’s a good idea to discuss your case with an attorney before agreeing to whatever amount the insurance company decides to offer. The insurance adjuster is not on your side, and they almost certainly know more about the law—and the individual policy in question—than you do.

Most Cases Settle Out of Court

Insurance companies also save money by avoiding court costs whenever possible. Lawyers for insurance companies will often agree to a settlement with attorneys representing the injured party rather than incur the expenses of a court case only to have to pay the claim anyway. Such a settlement is often considerably more than what the insurer would offer if you didn’t have an attorney on your side.

By working with an experienced lawyer, you give yourself the tools needed to help ensure you receive the maximum settlement to which you are entitled under the law. Don’t become a profit center for the insurance company. Let us put our knowledge to work for you.
