Car Accidents in 2012: Indiana Traffic Fatalities

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that Indiana traffic fatalities rose in 2012, the latest year for which complete statistics are available. About 779 people died that year, compared to 751 in 2011. These accidents involved 1,107 drivers.

Indiana Traffic Fatalities

NHTSA statistics amount to 11.92 fatalities per 100,000 people in Indiana, compared to a rate of 10.69 for the entire country. Other insights include the following:

  • Rural areas were far more dangerous, with 522 deaths compared to 257 in urban areas
  • Most fatalities involved only a single vehicle or departure from the roadway
  • Nearly 40% of the fatalities were in passenger cars, about 11% were in pickups, 10% were in utility trucks, and 6% were in vans
  • Speed was a factor in 185 fatalities
  • A blood alcohol concentration of .08 or greater contributed to 32% of the state fatalities, compared to 35% of the nationwide deaths
  • Motorcyclist fatalities numbered 152, with 32 of the riders being from 20 to 29 years old and another 32 riders being 30 to 39. Only two deaths affected those 20 and under. About 30 of the fatalities were helmeted, and 116 did not wear a helmet
  • About 59 pedestrians died, and 15 bicyclists were killed
  • Marion County, the most populous, had the highest number of fatalities, with 10% of the total. Lake County was next, with 5%, followed by Allen County with 3%
