Indianapolis’ Most Dangerous Intersections in 2015

Updated February 3, 2020 | By Wilson Kehoe Winingham staff

If you’re like most drivers, there are probably some intersections you hate to drive through. Maybe some have long delays during rush hour, or maybe it’s extremely difficult to take a left turn there. You might suffer patiently through them, or you might go a few blocks out of your way to avoid the worst of them.

In many cases, this isn’t just a feeling on your part: Some intersections are worse than others, and there’s actually a list of the worst intersections in Indiana, county by county, based on the number of accidents they see. If you drive around Indianapolis and Marion County, at least a few of these locations will be familiar.

Important Initiative

The Indiana University Public Policy Institute looks hard at traffic data in the state and produces numerous detailed analyses of accident rates, driving behavior, safety measures, and other important traffic-related issues. Their report on 2016 should be out soon, but let’s review some of last year’s findings . . .

The Worst of the Worst

The six intersections rated as the worst in Marion County in 2015 were as follows:

  • 38th Street & Guion (32 collisions)
  • 38th Street & High School Road (30 collisions)
  • Madison & Stop 11 Road (29 collisions)
  • 10th Street & Tibbs Avenue (28 collisions)
  • Emerson & Victory Drive (27 collisions)
  • Raymond & Shelby Street (26 collisions)

There were just under 10,000 collisions recorded in the county (9,983) in 2015, and while there were 30 fatalities countywide at intersections in 2015, none of them were recorded at the crossings that topped the list.

Recent Crashes Highlight Risk

Although they were rated the worst, these six intersections accounted for less than 2 percent of all intersection crashes, so drivers should continue to watch out at every other intersection. We’ve seen some serious intersection accidents in our area just in the past few weeks.

In February, four people were injured in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of IN-67 (Kentucky Avenue) and Ameriplex Parkway. And just last week, a man was killed in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of West Kessler Boulevard North Drive and Sylvan Road. Neither of these intersections were on last year’s list.
