The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has put together a list of the metro area’s top locations for traffic accidents. Are any of them near your home, or on your daily commute? Check out this map to see the dangerous intersections nearest you. Knowing when and where to use extra caution can help you prevent being involved in a crash.
What Makes an Intersection Dangerous?
Reasons why a particular intersection is dangerous can vary. Common hazards or conditions that warrant extra caution include:
- Road construction
- High traffic volume
- Lane reduction just before the junction
- More than two streets intersecting
- Roads intersecting at an unusual angle
- Heavy pedestrian or bicycle traffic
- Malfunctioning traffic lights
So-called “blind” intersections are particularly dangerous. Hills, trees or shrubs, parked cars and other conditions that block your view of oncoming traffic can make certain crossroads difficult for drivers to see oncoming traffic from one or more directions.
