It’s always been a real pleasure to go to South Bend, Indiana, to have a trial or to have an opportunity to work with some St. Joe County clients. My parents both grew up and went to school down in Marshall County in Plymouth. Both my grandfather and my father were fortunate to have jobs working for Baker Motors.
I’ve had several trials in St. Joe County. One involved a delayed diagnosis of a blood disorder of a Notre Dame student. It took me out onto the Notre Dame campus where my father got a master’s degree, so it was a unique experience to represent a Domer.
If you went down the stairs to my family room today, you would see a big gold sign that says “play like a champion today,” and I’m proud to say it’s signed by Ara Parseghian, a great National Championship coach for the Fighting Irish.
When I go back South Bend over the years, it’s typically been for a trial that may be somewhere between a week and two weeks. We always took time to visit the College Football Hall of Fame, which it was sad to see it leave the area. It was always a treat to take the staff out to the Tippecanoe place, have a fine dinner, and show them the old Studebaker mansion.
The last trial that I had in South Bend, even while the jury was deliberating, I was able to take a nice walk across the bridge on a sunny afternoon. I found a little dress shop and was able to pick something up for my wife that brightened her face as I walked in the back door and having had a wonderful reception by a St. Joe County jury that particular day.
