Memorial Day is over, and summer is almost here. Summer means beautiful weather, barbecues, and baseball. Unfortunately, we all make mistakes, and grilling mistakes can be disastrous.

Grilling Accident Statistics

According to national statistics, around 6,500 annual outdoor grilling fires are blamed for $27 million in property damages in the United States.

Grilling Safety Tips

It’s important to follow all safety recommendations for the grill and fuel source being used. In general, follow these tips:

  • Clean and check grill, propane hoses, and tanks regularly
  • Clean grill to prevent grease build-up
  • Never use water to extinguish grease or oil fires
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby
  • Keep the grill a minimum of 10 feet away from your house and trees
  • Do not grill on flammable surfaces or in an enclosed space
  • Avoid wearing loose clothing and use long handled utensils
  • Never leave a grill unattended
  • Douse coals with water before disposing

Grilling accidents and fires are preventable. Follow these important safety tips to ensure you don’t become another statistic.
