/ Blog/ Stryker Agrees to Settle Defective Hip Implant Lawsuits
On Monday, November 3, 2014, medical technologies giant Stryker agreed to pay at least $1.43 billion to settle defective hip implant lawsuits filed by injured patients who underwent revision surgeries to remove the implant.
The hundreds of lawsuits that have been filed against Stryker stem from two hip implants that Stryker recalled in 2012 due to corrosion and other problems. The two hip devices were the Rejuvenate Modular-Neck or the ABG II Modular-Neck. Lawsuits allege the metal components of the device could rub together, creating tiny particles of metallic debris to enter the body, causing severe damage to a patient’s tissue and muscle.
President of Stryker Orthopaedics, William J. Huffnagle, said, “This settlement program provides patients compensation in a fair, timely and efficient manner.”
Stryker’s settlement of $1.43 billion is one of the largest settlements against a medical device manufacturer. In 2013, the DePuy division of Johnson & Johnson agreed to pay $2.5 billion to resolve 8,000 lawsuits for injuries sustained due to metal-on-metal implants similar to Stryker’s devices.
