Another Compounding Pharmacy Recalls Drug

Updated December 28, 2018 | By Wilson Kehoe Winingham staff

Clinical Specialties of Martinez, Georgia has received reports of eye infections among patients who used the drug Avastin to treat macular degeneration, a common vision disorder in seniors. The company is recalling forty lots of the Roche drug that was distributed to doctors’ offices in Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Indiana since December 18, 2012.

Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of blindness among older Americans, affecting about two million people in the United States over the age of 50. The condition causes new blood vessels to grow in the eye and leak blood and fluid, damaging the retina and distorting vision.

If you have received Avastin as a macular degeneration treatment, consult with a physician as soon as possible.

FDA Inspections on the Rise

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stepped up inspections of compounding pharmacies after a fungal meningitis outbreak in 2012 was tied to the New England Compounding Center (NECC) in Framingham, Massachusetts. The tainted steroid has killed 50 and made more than 720 ill across the United States. Since the discovery, the NECC has shut down.

This week, Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D., Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration wrote: “I firmly believe that new legislation is necessary to help the FDA effectively oversee firms engaged in widespread distribution of sterile compounded drug products in advance of or without receiving a prescription.” Dr. Hamburg continued on to say: “Protecting Americans from unsafe and contaminated drugs is not just an important responsibility for FDA—it is part of our core mission.”
