On April 23, 2015, during a student-led musical at Westfield High School, a portion of the stage where the students were performing collapsed beneath them. According to a report from the Indy Star, around 30 teens fell about twenty feet when the stage collapsed. Seventeen of those students were injured, and all but one required medical treatment.
The superintendent of Westfield schools reported that the part of the stage that collapsed was a removable floor over the orchestra pit. The stage had been updated and redone a few years ago. The school district is cooperating with investigators and is turning over architectural and building records.
The report recounts the experience of one student who had fallen through the stage and thought he was all right, only to later experience worsening pain in his arm and leg. He was taken to the hospital where it was discovered that he had suffered a sprained arm and a broken leg. He and all of the other injured students have now been released from area hospitals.
The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration (IOSHA) opened an investigation into the Westfield stage collapse. The formal investigation could take months to complete.
