Indiana Pain Clinic Doctor Under Investigation

October 22, 2014 Drug Injuries, Medical Malpractice

Physician William Hedrick, who founded Centers for Pain Relief (also known as Indiana Pain Center) is being investigated for over-prescribing medications and possible forgery and fraud.

Authorities raided the Centers for Pain Relief in Muncie on Monday, October 21. In March 2013, the Indiana Medical Licensing Board placed Hedrick on a two-year probation for breaching the standard of care, failing to properly supervise employees and overusing steroid injections in the spine.

Investigators said as many as 150 patients were seen every day at the Muncie location; so many that the parking lot had to be expanded shortly after opening the Muncie location in July 2013.

At least eight of Hedrick’s patients have died from drug overdoses. During a two-year period, three nurse practitioners prescribed more than 99,000 prescriptions at various pain clinic locations. Some pharmacies in Muncie refused to fill prescriptions from Hedrick’s clinics.

Delaware Circuit Court 1 Judge Marianne Vorhees issued a search warrant for records related to forgery, Medicaid fraud, insurance fraud and corrupt business influence.

Drug overdose is a massive problem in the United States, not helped by some pain center doctors who can overprescribe. According to the CDC, drug overdose rates have more than tripled since 1990. And nearly three out of four of those are caused by prescription painkillers. This points toward a serious problem.
