Indianapolis Area’s New “Diverging Diamond” Freeway Interchange

A newly redesigned interchange at I-65 and Worthsville Road in Greenwood, Indiana may be a bit confusing for drivers not familiar with the “diverging diamond” traffic pattern. It’s the first of this type of interchange in the area.

Diverging Diamond Interchange Benefits

The new interchange design reportedly reduces crashes by eliminating the crossing of traffic lanes when making a left turn. In fact, diverging diamonds have only 14 points of contact compared to 26 for traditional interchanges. Other benefits include the following:

  • Better turning sight distance
  • Shorter pedestrian crossings
  • Points of conflict spread throughout interchange
  • Easy-to-navigate pathways

Additionally, the $16.1 million project will not only reduce crashes—it also gives drivers another option to get into rapidly-growing Greenwood from the interstate. The Indiana Department of Transportation will also be adding bike lanes and sidewalks to the interchange, but that portion of the project won’t be complete until spring 2016.
