Falling I-Beam
A routine unloading of a truck carrying long steel I-beams used in highway bridge construction became dangerous when a site supervisor insisted on removing the beams while the truck was parked on a steep slope. The beams were removed from the truck by a crane. Our client, the employee of a subcontractor, was attaching the crane cable to the beams on the truck. When the crane operator ignored his signals, a beam slipped from the cable and crushed our client’s right leg. The steep slope contributed to the accident because of the difficulty in keeping the beams level. We built an elaborate model of the construction site to account for numerous issues involving the sight lines of witnesses, the angle of the truck and beams, the availability of more appropriate equipment for removing the beams, and other site questions. The case was successfully settled at mediation.
