Indianapolis has experienced the 3rd snowiest January on record with a total of 23.3″. Season to date, we’ve seen 32.2″ of snow. It’s not only the snow that’s causing havoc, it’s the below zero temperatures and the -40° wind chill.

spaceheater_7Needless to say, it’s hard for our furnaces to keep up with the frigid temperatures. Supplemental heating sources can help alleviate some of the stress put on our furnaces during the cold winter months.

Space heaters are an excellent source of heat and relatively inexpensive. However, err on the side of caution. In 2011, space heaters accounted for 33% of home heating fires and 81% of home heating fire deaths.

Safety should be your #1 priority when using space heaters. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimated 6,000 people received emergency room care for burn injuries due to contact with hot surfaces from space heaters. The use of space heaters is associated with 25,000 residential fires annually, resulting in more than 300 deaths.

When using space heaters, make sure they’re clean and free of dust. Only purchase newer models that have all of the current safety features. As always, don’t place the heaters next to things that can burn, such as furniture, bedding, curtains, etc. For more information, watch this informational video provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA):
