Indianapolis Bicycle Hit-and-Run Accident Still Unsolved

Updated May 3, 2023 | By Wilson Kehoe Winingham staff

A bicyclist in Greenwood, Indiana (just south of Indianapolis) continues to recover after a hit-and-run driver struck him this summer. The driver has still not been identified.

Jon Kim was hit around 12:30 am on August 10, 2016 by a dark-colored pickup truck, which then left the scene. Kim suffered a broken leg as well as a broken jaw, broken nose, and several broken bones in his face. He also lost several teeth. The crash wasn’t caught on video. A nearby camera picked up the sounds of the impact along with a woman’s scream. This video led police to suspect there was a passenger in the vehicle. The vehicle then sped away after the crash.

Cyclists and Pedestrians Often at Risk

Kim was lucky, even though his injuries were serious. Indiana had an estimated 95 pedestrian fatalities in 2015. If accurate, it would be more than any single year in the past decade. Pedestrian fatalities are up as a percentage of crash deaths nationwide.

There are several reasons for this, but one of the most telling is that as cars have become safer. Little has been done to improve the safety of pedestrians when a crash happens, and not much has changed in bicycle safety in recent years. There are now more people cycling and walking to work than ever, which is another reason for the increase.

Indiana Bicycle Crashes

It was not a good summer overall for cyclists in Indiana. In July, another Greenfield cyclist was run down by a semi-truck. That same week, in Cicero, a cyclist died when he fell and suffered head injuries (no other vehicle is believed to have been involved). In August, a cyclist was killed in downtown Indianapolis by a drunk driver, who was chased down and apprehended by police. At the end of August, an Indiana Wesleyan student died in a crash in Fort Wayne.

Greenwood seems to have had more than its share of incidents. In addition to the cyclist killed by a semi-truck and Kim’s devastating hit-and-run crash, another hit-and-run left part of that town’s Main Street closed. No one knows exactly what happened, but some kind of large truck crashed into a building and then fled. Part of the street had to be closed until repairs could be completed. Fortunately, no one was injured in that crash.
