Carmel to Fix Dangerous Intersection

Updated December 28, 2018 | By Wilson Kehoe Winingham staff

About 90,000 cars per day come through the intersection of Keystone Avenue and 96th Street on the border of Indianapolis and Carmel, Indiana. Not only is this one of the busiest intersections in Indiana, it’s also one of the most dangerous. In just the past two years, personal injury accidents at this intersection have risen by 40%.

Plans to Improve Intersection

For this reason, Carmel’s mayor and city council are moving ahead with a project to overhaul this intersection by building a two-level roundabout in its place, despite having not received a federal grant to help fund the project. Carmel plans to re-apply for federal grant funding this spring, but Mayor Jim Brainard says the city plans to begin overhauling this hazardous intersection beginning next summer, with or without federal aid.
